General Motors’ newest pickup truck costs just $9,000

Pick-ups are ubiquitous in the US, but the entry level of the segment is empty.  Ford may soon sell a new truck under $20,000, but this is still double the equivalent asking price of GM's latest Chinese offering, the Zhengtu.

General Motors’ newest pickup truck costs just $9,000 and turns into a flatbed. The company has been making big news in China with small vehicles built by its local joint-venture brand, Wuling Motors.

The new Zhengtu is a compact crew cab truck with seating for 5 and a 6.5-foot bed with sides that fold down like the tailgate to create a large flatbed. The sides also open a full 180 degrees down to offer easy access to the bed. Don’t expect to load a lot of cargo, though. The Zhengtu is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at just 99 hp.

There are no plans to export the vehicle.
