Summer of Kindness Project 4 : Community GardensThe Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation and Beekman 1802 carried out their fourth Summer of Kindness project with the creation of community gardens. There had been multiple kindness form submissions from children whose ideas were to plant community gardens to help grow food for local families in need. On Tuesday, August 3, Kindness Crew members participated in National Night Out events at several different New York State locations, including Clifton Park Commons in Clifton Park, Tawasentha Park in Guilderland, and Riverfront Park in Rensselaer. At each location, Crew members set up planter boxes and invited children to plant vegetable seeds – kicking off the start of community gardens that would then be donated to local organizations. Children who participated in the project were able to leave a lasting mark symbolizing their part in the project by signing their names on the planter boxes. They were also given seed packets to take with them and grow their own vegetables at home. After the event, the gardens were donated to the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, Veterans & Community Housing Coalition and St. Paul's Center. The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation and Beekman 1802 are inviting children to “deposit kindness” by submitting their ideas on how they would spread kindness where they live. Kindness forms are available at any Sunmark Credit Union location, or online at www.sunmark.org/kindness. Children are invited to deposit their ideas into the Beekman 1802 goat banks located at any Sunmark branch, or via email at kindness@sunmark.org. |
