Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation Kicks Off Annual “Summer of Kindness” With Girls’ Day Out Collaboration
(Latham, N.Y.) The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation partnered with Working Group on Girls of Schenectady, Inc. on Thursday, May 30 to participate in their annual Girls’ Day Out event with students from Schenectady City Schools.
In alignment with Sunmark Credit Union’s celebration of Mental Health Month and as the first project in the Foundation’s 2024 Summer of Kindness campaign, Sunmark led a group of 150 eighth grade girls in assembling toiletry bags curated with items promoting physical and mental health. A total of 200 bags, branded with a “You Are Awesome” message, were filled with body lotions, Beekman 1802 soap bars, lip balms, eye masks, positive affirmation stickers, calming sensory strips, gratitude journals and inspirational key chains.
At the end of the workshop, each girl received a completed care bag with the extra bags donated back to the Schenectady School District to have available in their counseling center. Girls’ Day Out was held at Union College in Schenectady and attended by the eighth-grade students who participated in a day of workshops, activities, and classes focused on creating habits that build positive relationships, successful futures, and mental and physical well-being.
The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation will continue more Kindness Projects in its Summer of Kindness series throughout June, July, and August. Sunmark invites children up to age 12 to participate and “deposit kindness” by submitting ideas of how they would spread kindness in their local communities. Throughout the summer, a Kindness Crew comprised of Foundation members and Sunmark staff will work to bring selected ideas to life. To submit an idea or learn more, visit sunmark.org/kindness or email kindness@sunmark.org
