Sunmark Foundation Celebrates Area Teachers While Supporting Local Small Businesses in Third “Summer of Kindness” Project

(Latham, NY) – The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation showed appreciation for teachers across the Capital Region on Monday, June 10th as part of its annual Summer of Kindness initiative. The Foundation, which supports local nonprofit community organizations through financial contributions; in-kind services; and volunteer support, invited area teachers to join them for free ice cream at three small businesses in the Latham, Clifton Park, and Guilderland communities.

From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the Foundation’s Kindness Crew set-up shop at Corner Ice Cream in Guilderland, Control Tower Ice Cream in Latham, and Hayner’s Ice Cream & Country Store in Halfmoon. Teachers who attended were treated to their choice of ice cream, with their bills covered by The Sunmark Charitable Community Foundation.

This specific Kindness Project revisits the inaugural Summer of Kindness launched in 2021. Initially inspired by children's Kindness Deposits, which expressed a desire to do something special for teachers who had navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event aims to continue the tradition of expressing gratitude and kindness to educators.

“We wanted to revisit our roots and capture the essence of our first Summer of Kindness,” said Audrey Stone, Vice President of the Foundation. “Although the initial event focused on the challenges posed by COVID, we continue to hear from students that they want to show appreciation to their teachers. This remains a central theme in our Kindness Workshops and the Kindness Deposit forms we receive.”

The Summer of Kindness campaign will continue throughout June, July, and August. Children up to age 12 are encouraged to participate by submitting their ideas on how to spread kindness within their communities. The Foundation’s Kindness Crew, consisting of Foundation members and Sunmark staff, will work to bring selected ideas to fruition. To submit an idea or learn more, visit sunmark.org/kindness or email kindness@sunmark.org.
